THE VANILLA ISLE

One of the most well-known of the Indian Ocean islands and certainly one of its most popular, Mauritius has a long and fascinating history and has been influenced by a range of cultures, from Arabic, African and Asian to French and English.

Mauritius was first inhabited by Arab and Malay sailors, followed by the Dutch in the 17th century, and then the French in the 18th century. It became a British colony in 1810 and gained independence in 1968. So it really offers a blend of incredible influences.

Its volcanic past has created soaring peaks and dramatic mountain scenery, fringed by soft white sand beaches and warm, azure waters. Renowned for its range of luxurious beach resorts and golf courses, it's also famed for growing vanilla and sugar cane, which it exports across the world. Mauritian cuisine is a reflection of its multi-cultural society, with lots of Creole spice and fabulous flavours.

The island is also home to a wonderful array of fauna and flora, from luscious plant species and rare endemic birds to a plethora of marine species that make scuba diving and snorkelling an absolute must. From the bustling and scenically beautiful capital of Port Louis to gorgeous Grand Baie, Mauritius is also a shopping and leisure mecca.

THE COASTS OF KENYA AND TANZANIA

Kenya and Tanzania have a lot to offer when it comes to beach destinations. Whether you're looking for a place to relax, explore the marine life, or indulge in adventure activities, you are spoiled for choice with some of the most beautiful beaches in Africa waiting to be discovered.

In Kenya, the coast around the port of Mombassa is the place to be. Diani Beach and Watamu Beach come tops and are blessed with some world-class resorts that take advantage of the soft white sand and clear, warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

There's also Lamu Island located off the coast  and famed for its beaches as well as its traditional Swahili architecture. Visitors can explore the island's old town, take a dhow cruise, and enjoy various water sports.

Tanzania's leading beach destinations can be found on the island of Zanzibar and the clutch of small islands off its coast, including beautiful Pemba with its unspoilt beaches and pristine coral reefs.
