So, you're headed to stunning South Africa with Luxury Focus Safaris... What can you expect? What's there to do? How will it all fit together? First of all - welcome to the "Rainbow Nation"! As your safari adventure unfolds, here are some indispensable tips to make the most of your time in this extraordinary country.

Once you touch down, whether in Johannesburg or Cape Town, your adventure truly begins. We'll be there to welcome you and if you're catching an internal flight, we'll help you to the domestic departures terminal.

For those choosing to self-drive, car rental services are conveniently located at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg and Cape Town International Airport and we'll guide you to them. If you’re headed to the African wilderness on safari, you can expect a warm welcome on arrival, whether you're flying in or driving yourself.

Into the wilderness

If you're venturing into the bush, wildlife activities take center stage. Safari lodges and camps typically provide morning and afternoon game drives. In the Greater Kruger region, you can indulge in full-day drives in the legendary Kruger National Park or opt for guided game and birding walks. Beyond the Big Five, explore the magnificent Blyde River Canyon, marvel at Bourke's Luck Potholes, and soak in the breathtaking views along the fabled Panorama Route.

Prepare for the thrill of game drives in open safari vehicles. Early morning and late afternoon drives capitalize on optimal light for photography and wildlife sightings. Mornings commence at dawn, while afternoons include the "golden hour" of sunlight and night drives with spotlights to spot nocturnal species.

In Big Five country, you may encounter these iconic African wildlife species – buffalo, elephant, rhino, lion, and leopard - as well as a host of other amazing wildlife like cheetah, painted wolves (African wild dog), hyena, giraffe, zebra, and an amazing array of birdlife.

For a different perspective, embark on a guided bush walk, delving into the intricate world of small creatures and plants often overlooked during drives. Many lodges and camps offer walking in the mornings when the temperatures are better for physical exertion!

Beyond organized activities, wildlife often graces your safari lodge grounds. Antelope and warthogs may roam nearby, and birdwatching by the pool is a serene way to connect with South Africa's diverse avian life. Feel free to explore the lodge surroundings during the day, reveling in the natural beauty all around you.

Explore Cape Town

If Cape Town is part of your itinerary, we recommend dedicating a couple of full days to explore its enchanting offerings. Immerse yourself in the city's history, take a cable car journey up Table Mountain for panoramic views. Don't miss the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront or the Two Oceans Aquarium and consider a township tour for a deeper understanding of South Africa's diverse culture. The nearby Winelands are also a must, offering a taste of the region's finest vintages.

Along the coast you can dive into the marine wonders of South Africa's two oceans - the Atlantic and the Indian. From great white sharks to southern right whales and African penguins, you can embark on ocean safaris, shark cage diving, whale watching (in season), visits to seal colonies, and birding. The whale watching season generally lasts from July to November each year.

Your South African adventure promises a tapestry of experiences – from vibrant cities to untamed wilderness. So, sit back, relax, and let the beauty of this extraordinary land captivate you.
