The Victoria Falls - "Zam" or "Zim"?

Which country offers the best viewing options for this natural wonder?

Straddling the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, the mighty Zambezi River plunges over the edge of a gaping rock chasm, creating a thundering spectacle of cascading water and mist-laden rainbows. Arguably the crown jewel of Southern Africa, this iconic landmark is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World - the Victoria Falls... But which country is the best for experiencing this incredible natural wonder? Zambia or Zimbabwe? Let's find out...

While not the tallest or widest waterfall, the Victoria Falls boast a combined height of 354 feet and a width of 1.06 miles, making it the largest sheet of falling water on Earth. During peak flood season, a staggering 133-million gallons of water surge over the edge every minute, with the spray visible from nearly 31 miles away. This very spray inspired the local name, Mosi-oa-Tunya, which translates to "The Smoke That Thunders."

Given its grandeur, Victoria Falls has long been a must-visit for travelers exploring Southern Africa. But with access from both the Zambian and Zimbabwean sides of the river, a common question arises: which side offers the better experience?

The Zimbabwean Side

Roughly 75% of Victoria Falls lies within Zimbabwe, making it the traditional viewing location. Victoria Falls National Park, though small at just 9 square miles, is impressive, featuring walkways that lead through the spray-soaked rainforest to 16 magnificent viewpoints. Here, you'll be treated to panoramic, head-on views of the falls, unmatched from the Zambian side.

Activities on the Zimbabwean side are plentiful, including scenic river cruises, exhilarating jet boat rides and white-water rafting adventures on the Zambezi, breathtaking helicopter flights over the falls, and historical tours of the iconic Victoria Falls Railway Bridge. If you're looking to combine your Victoria Falls experience with a safari adventure, Zimbabwe shines due to its proximity to both Zambezi National Park and Hwange National Park, the largest and most renowned park in the country.

The Zambian Side

While Zimbabwe has historically attracted the majority of visitors, the Zambian side remains a compelling option for those seeking a more off-the-beaten-path experience. Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is roughly three times larger than Victoria Falls National Park, offering a wilder and more remote feel. Hiking trails connect four viewpoints, allowing you to get much closer to the falls than you can in Zimbabwe.

Although the Zambian views offer a side-on perspective rather than a full frontal one, this side boasts the best sunsets overlooking the falls. Zambia offers similar activities as Zimbabwe, with a few unique additions – microlight tours soaring above the falls and excursions to Livingstone Island and the infamous Devil's Pool. Livingstone Island grants you the chance to experience the same awe-inspiring view explorer David Livingstone had when he first laid eyes on the falls in 1855, while Devil's Pool is a natural swimming pool perched right on the edge of the precipice.

However, the Zambian side has its drawbacks. Firstly, this section of the falls can dry up almost entirely during October and November. Secondly, Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park isn't known for its biodiversity and wildlife compared to other national parks in Zambia.

The Verdict: To Zambia or Zimbabwe?

Ultimately, the best choice depends on your priorities:

Classic, full-on views: Zimbabwe provides the quintessential Victoria Falls experience, showcasing the water's full force even during the dry season. It's also ideal for single-country vacations that combine a Victoria Falls adventure with unforgettable wildlife encounters. Plus, many visitors prefer the quaint charm of Victoria Falls town compared to Livingstone's more industrial vibe. On the Zimbabwean side, you can walk from town to the National Park, while transportation is required from Livingstone unless you stay at hotels bordering the falls.

Up-close encounters and sunsets: Zambia offers the opportunity to stand much closer to the falls and witness their dramatic beauty bathed in the golden light of sunset. Additionally, some travelers feel safer in Zambia, while others are drawn by the unique experiences offered here. Swimming in Devil's Pool, located at the very edge of the falls, is a particularly unforgettable (and seasonal) activity.

The Ideal Solution: Experience Both Sides

An inside look at Tswalu Kalahari

Join us as we explore this South African conservation and safari legend

When you travel across sub-Saharan Africa staying at some of the best safari lodges and camps on the continent, you tend to get the inside edge on amazing places to stay. So, we asked award-winning South African travel writer Sharon Gilbert-Rivett to tell us about one of her favorite places - Tswalu Kalahari in South Africa's breathtaking Northern Cape province - and share with us what she thinks makes it so special. She's had the privilege of spending time there and here shares her thoughts and observations with us, giving you an inside peek at this incredible safari destination...

Tswalu. Its name means "new beginning" in the local Tswana vernacular, so as I fly over the vast, arid hinterland of South Africa's most remote province - the Northern Cape - I wonder what I will find out there in the parched, nondescript patchwork of cattle farms that I can see from the window of the plush Pilatus that's taking me from Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport to this legendary place.

There’s something to be said for private planes. Indeed, anything which avoids the hassles of getting to the airport, finding parking, check-in and security queues, buses to and from a past-its-sell-by-date plane which is parked in the farthest possible spot from the main terminal building, waiting for luggage, etc etc, has my vote!

The land below is denuded… exhausted… spent… and I find myself reflecting that farming here must be a supreme act of will and those who attempt it inspire my admiration for their sheer tenacity.

An hour and a half out of the private hangar at Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport, the landscape begins to change. Now dotted with the deep grey scars that are the calling card of manganese mines, the quilt of farmland stops abruptly, giving way to the gentle slopes of the Korannaberg before stretching away uninterrupted to the horizon. This is my destination – the 282,000 acres of virtually pristine "green Kalahari" desert that makes up Tswalu Kalahari, the largest private game reserve in South Africa.

It's owned by the Oppenheimer family of Anglo American fame. Nicky and Strilli Oppenheimer were given first rights to the land in the will of its previous owner, Mancunian entrepreneur and hunter Stephen Boler, who died suddenly in 1998. It was Boler who had begun the task of turning what had been a cattle farm into something resembling natural bush, albeit for hunting purposes.

The hunting stopped as soon as the Oppenheimers took possession and so began a long, and often arduous road to fulfil the dream Nicky and Strilli had of restoring the Kalahari to itself. Untold tonnes of manmade structures were removed along with countless waterholes, irrigation systems, alien flora species and kilometres of barbed wire.

The property was extended to include sensitive habitats and grasses were allowed to regrow. Indigenous game was reintroduced, most notably in the form of beautiful black-maned Kalahari lions. And a luxury lodge was opened – The Motse – offering visitors the chance to indulge in an authentic desert safari experience. It was joined by the Oppenheimer’s former private home – Tarkuni – which is offered as a private safari house, and now Loapi Camp - less a tented camp and more a collection of uber-luxurious canvas safari homes.

Some three decades down the road the Oppenheimer’s dream of restoring this part of the southern, or “green” Kalahari has been more than fulfilled. Studying the large relief map in The Motse's lounge, I muse on the vast expanse surrounding me. Arid mountain bushveld which makes up part of the Korannaberg in the east of the property gives way westwards to gently rolling dunes and vast open pans in the south-west.

To the north-east lies the appropriately named Hotazel, and to the north-west Van Zylsrus. Tswalu is around 186 miles north-west of Kimberley and 167km north-east of Upington. Botswana is around 43 miles to the west and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is within easy driving distance.

The reserve is vast, adding new meaning to the notion of exclusivity. In your private vehicle you get an incredible sense of remoteness as you traverse the dramatic landscapes that range from the magnificent mountains to the gently rolling grass-covered dunes that resemble a sandy sea. Life is everywhere, in spite of the arid nature of the environment. And some of that life is preciously unusual and rare.

Tswalu is the one place in South Africa where you are most likely to see the elusive and endangered ground pangolin - an animal renowned as the holy grail of game viewing. Indeed, when it comes to pangolin spotting, Tswalu is the place to be, especially when temperatures drop and the odd-looking creatures adopt diurnal habits. It's made it a research hot spot for scientists studying this incredible little creature.

There's a lot more than just pangolins on offer at Tswalu. With some 80 mammal species and 240 species of birds – including Namaqua sandgrouse and pygmy falcon - you’re not going to get bored on a Tswalu game drive. The “usual suspects” for the area include gemsbok, sable, tsessebe, roan, aardvark, porcupine and springbok. Add to them giraffe, buffalo, zebra (Burchells and Hartmann’s mountain), eland, cheetah, brown hyena, aardwolf and hartebeest.

And then there’s the meerkats, Tswalu has habituated “mobs” or clans and guests are able to get exceptionally close to them with the help of resident human helpers whose job it is to monitor them and maintain their levels of habituation. It’s a huge drawcard and one which has made Tswalu a popular port of call on safari itineraries.

The area around Tswalu is the ancestral home of the San bushmen and there are some ancient petroglyphs up in the mountains which is why, a few hours later, I find myself on top of the Korannaberg with the most incredible vista laid out before me.

The climb up to the petroglyphs has revealed more about the geology and flora of the region thanks to my guide's encyclopaedic knowledge and the ancient engravings and stone tools which lie seemingly in gay abandon at every turn are testament to the people whose descendants make up a large portion of Tswalu’s complement of more than 140 staff.

It's this team of people that go to the very heart of what Tswalu is all about and its deep and abiding commitment to the people of this place.

In 2008 Jonathan Oppenheimer established the Tswalu Foundation with the aim of developing a platform from which Tswalu’s guests could contribute and involve themselves in both the community and environmental research on the reserve.

The foundation is registered as a non-profit organisation which, as well as funding species, ecological and applied research in the Kalahari eco-systems also provides grants for the development of social and community projects.

Among these is the Tswalu Clinic which came about when Dr Ludwig Focking and his wife Eva visited the reserve and decided to become involved in helping to improve the health of the local community. The clinic has become a vital health and education centre in this remote part of the world and now attracts medical professionals from all over the world who come to share their expertise. The clinic oversees the provision of primary healthcare, handling everything from cuts and scrapes to pre-natal care, blood tests and eye tests and dispensing certain basic medicines.

Looking after Tswalu’s staff and community of families extends to the staff village with its energy and water-efficient homes, pre-school crèche and daycare centre and adult literacy programme. Environmental projects the foundation has spearheaded include research into the brown hyena, namaqua sandgrouse, aardvark and scorpions and now, of course, pangolins.

Where to stay:

The Motse consists of a village of nine luxury “legae” – beautifully appointed thatched suites, three of which are two-bedroomed family units. Each legae has an outside stoep with views over a nearby waterhole and the dunes of the Kalahari beyond, and is climate controlled to ensure absolute comfort no matter what the season. The décor and design is a blend of contemporary and traditional furniture in muted desert tones. Open fireplaces, linen and luxurious en-suite facilities top off the accommodation. The Motse’s communal areas are built on several levels around a swimming pool, with salas and lapas offering respite from the sun. There’s a lovely indoor lounge, bar, dining area and library and a boma where bush braais are regularly served.

Tarkuni sleeps 10 people on an exclusive, bespoke basis and has its own host and chef.

Loapi Camp is tucked away in a secluded valley of the Korannaberg and offers six stand-alone modular-style tented villas offering exceptional luxury and exclusivity. There are four one-bedroom homes and two two-bedroom villas, all with their own safari vehicles, private guides and stunning views.

Irrespective of where you stay, you get your own vehicle, guide and tracker to look after you for the duration of your visit. Activities include morning and evening game drives, walks, horse-riding, the Tswalu Kalahari Spa with its range of therapies and treatments, star-gazing and tours of the staff village and community facilities. There's also the inimitable Klein Jan restaurant.

Tswalu is an eight-hour drive from Johannesburg but scheduled flights are available from both Cape Town and Johannesburg.

The jewel of the Kalahari

The adventure begins in the breathtaking Okavango Delta, a sprawling oasis in the heart of the otherwise arid expanse of the Kalahari Desert. This is where the Okavango River ends a journey that began in the highlands of Angola, emptying its waters every year into the parched landscape, creating a mesmerizing mosaic of channels, lagoons and islands in one of the world's largest inland alluvial fans.

Known as the inundation, this life-giving flood takes place in the peak of the winter months as the dry season takes hold, bringing with it one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa as animals of all description move into the Delta to take advantage of the fresh grazing and browsing this wonderful wetland provides.

The floodwaters mean peak season for safari enthusiasts, drawn here by the phenomenal game viewing and birding and the chance to explore this incredible place in a number of different ways, from traditional game drives and walking safaris to boat-based expeditions, kayaks and dug-out canoes known as mokoros which are poled from the rear by experienced guides.

There is little to beat the sensation of gliding silently through the labyrinthine waterways in a mokoro, experiencing a sensory overload as you watch herds of elephants wading through the shallow channels, with water the colour of clear iced tea lapping gently all around you. Overhead, a kaleidoscope of birdlife fills the sky, from vibrant kingfishers to majestic African fish eagles... This really is safari heaven.

Exploring the Delta's islands on foot offers a more intimate perspective, allowing you to track wildlife through the reed-lined channels and open floodplains. Guided bush walks reveal hidden wonders not often seen from a vehicle or boat and are an absolute must, as are traditional game drives on the larger islands, locating the huge herds of buffalo who take refuge here, often pursued by prides of lion.

Dinners are invariably taken under a canopy of stars, with the sounds of the African night all around you - with melodious frogs, crickets, owls and occasionally the haunting call of a distant hyena or the roar of lion calling to its pride-mates.

Chobe - a northern paradise

While there are only small areas of the Okavango where you can find water all year round, to the north lies a wilderness renowned for its impressive river system, where the waters of the Chobe River meet the mighty Zambezi and life congregates in abundance... This is Chobe National Park, spreading inland from the river that gives it its name and forms a border with neighbouring Namibia, covering ancient swamplands and marshes and featuring a river that changes direction on a regular basis...

Accessed from the border town of Kasane, Chobe is a safari enigma, offering exceptional riverfront adventures from boat-based safaris to luxurious houseboats that cruise the waters, offering multiple-night excursions along this legendary waterway and providing a unique point of view for keen safari enthusiasts. Inland, Chobe encompasses some of the most wildlife-rich regions of Botswana, from the magical Savuti marshlands to the intriguing Selinda Spillway which has been known to change the direction of its flow as it links the Lintanti swamps to the Okavango Delta.

Renowned for its massive herds of elephant and buffalo, Chobe is also a predator haven, being home to leopard, lion and cheetah, as well as large packs of painted wolves (African wild dogs), and lesser-known predators like caracal, serval and African wild cats. For birders Chobe is outstanding, especially along the river and on its various islands which are used as nesting sites by yellow-billed storks and other species of waterfowl like the African jacana. The air is also filled with birds of prey like the African fish eagle, osprey and white-backed vulture, and colourful species like the southern carmine bee-eater, little bee-eater, African skimmer and saddle-billed stork.

Along the riverbanks crocodiles bask in the sun, their prehistoric forms blending seamlessly with the shoreline, and hippos take up residence in the shallows, emerging at dusk to graze on the open floodplains. On land, Chobe National Park offers equally impressive game viewing opportunities.

Game drives through the park's savannah plains reveal a wealth of wildlife, with huge herds of plains game like zebra and wildebeest, as well as red lechwe, sable, kudu and giraffe. The Savuti Marsh area, in particular, is renowned for its predator sightings, with lions and hyenas vying for dominance amidst the rugged terrain.

The sunsets here are spectacular, especially from the river, and sundowner cruises from your lodge or houseboat are therefore highly recommended. Chobe is also a photographer's paradise and the perfect place to flex your lens and hone your photographic skills.

An ancient land revealed

Continuing eastward from Chobe brings you to the jaw-dropping beauty of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, a vast expanse of shimmering salt pans that stretch as far as the eye can see. Once part of an ancient super lake that covered much of southern Africa, the Makgadikgadi Pans are a testament to the ever-changing nature of the African landscape.

The Makgadikgadi Pans were formed thousands of years ago when a vast inland lake, known as Lake Makgadikgadi, began to dry up due to geological shifts and changes in climate. Today, the pans consist of a series of interconnected salt flats, including Sowa, Nwetwe, and Nxai Pans, among others.

Sowa Pan is the largest of the Makgadikgadi Pans and is located near the town of Sowa. It is known for its vast expanse of white salt crust, which stretches to the horizon in all directions. The pan is also home to the Sowa Saltworks, where salt is harvested for commercial use.

Nwetwe Pan is situated to the southwest of Sowa Pan and is characterized by its stark, lunar-like landscape. It is surrounded by grasslands and shrublands, which provide important habitat for wildlife, particularly during the wet season when temporary water sources form on the pan.

Nxai Pan National Park encompasses a portion of the Makgadikgadi Pans, including Nxai Pan itself and the surrounding grasslands. The park is known for its iconic baobab trees, which dot the landscape, as well as its resident wildlife, including zebras, wildebeests, giraffes, and predators such as lions and cheetahs.

Exploring the salt pans is an otherworldly experience, as the stark white plains stretch to the horizon, broken only by the occasional silhouette of a rocky outcrop bedecked in ancient baobab trees. Here, time seems to stand still, and the vastness of the landscape inspires a sense of awe and wonder. In the dry season between May and October you can venture out onto the salt pans on quad bikes, traversing the surreal terrain on four wheels, stopping to marvel at the natural beauty that surrounds you.

The Makgadikgadi is also home to a spectacular zebra and wildebeest migration every year as huge herds of these animals move across the pans in search of fresh grazing, invariably followed by predators like lions and cheetah. Along the edges of the pans, you'll find meerkat colonies and brown hyenas.

In addition to its natural wonders, Makgadikgadi National Park is also home to ancient archaeological sites, including the historic baobab tree known as Baines' Baobab, a former landmark for early explorers, and the awe-inspiring Kubu Island which has been used as a campsite for thousands of years by this land's original human inhabitants - the San bushmen. The landscape of the Makgadikgadi Pans undergoes dramatic changes throughout the year, depending on seasonal rainfall patterns. Estimated to be between 55 and 80 million years in the making, this vast, arid thirstland was named "Namib" by the Nama people, its essence is encapsulated in the meaning — a vast place - where the very sands hold stories from eons past.

As you traverse this ancient landscape, the Namib reveals its diverse character. From the immense sea of red sand dunes that paint the horizon to rocky and gravel plains that stretch into the distance, each vista tells a tale of endurance and transformation.

Perhaps most iconic are the colossal dunes of Sossusvlei, towering like giants against the canvas of the desert. Here, the striking contrast of the white salt and clay pan against the rich red dunes - the highest in the world - creates a surreal panorama, while nearby Deadvlei houses the skeletal remains of ancient camel thorn trees, stark black against the towering dunes.

Lion - the majestic monarchs of the savanna

Africa's charismatic lion population may be declining, but these majestic creatures remain relatively easy to spot. Their fearless nature, lack of natural predators, and communal lifestyle make them a common sight in many national parks and game reserves.

Ruaha National Park in Tanzania is home to 10% of Africa's lion population. South Africa's Greater Kruger National Park is also a hotspot for the "king" of beasts. Botswana is also known for its daylight leopard sightings. Cheetah: The sprinter of the plains

The fastest land animal on Earth, the cheetah is both elusive and solitary. While more challenging to spot due to their shy nature, you can increase your chances in parks with higher population numbers. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in South Africa and Botswana, the Serengeti, and Masai Mara during migration season are great choices. Alternatively, head to the Chitabe area in Botswana's Okavango Delta. Namibia is also known for its cheetahs, as is South Africa's Kruger National Park and its surrounding private game reserves.

The painted wolf (African wild dog): A blessing to behold

Painted wolves face the threat of extinction due to poaching, habitat loss, and diseases. Despite their scarcity, a few destinations still host stable populations. Hwange National Park and Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe, Ruaha National Park in Tanzania, and the Manyeleti, Timbavati and Klaserie game reserves in South Africa's Greater Kruger are renowned for their wild dog conservation efforts and excellent sightings. The painted wolf is Africa's most successful hunter in terms of kill rates and is especially engaging to spend time with, so when you do get the chance to observe them in the wild, feel truly blessed to do so!

Elephant: Africa's iconic gentle giants

More than any other animal, the African elephant is perhaps the most recognised across the world. While population numbers continue to decline, thanks largely to ivory poaching, there are still some places where you can see huge herds of these magnficient animals. Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, Chobe National Park in Botswana, the Kruger National Park in South Africa and Tarangire National Park in Tanzania are some of the best spots, along with Amboseli in Kenya, the home of big tusker bulls.

Rhino: species under threat

In spite of the scourge of poaching which has decimated populations of both white and black rhinos across Africa, it is still possible to see these incredible creatures in the wild, thanks to round the clock protection and conservation efforts. White rhinos are still more numerous than their black rhino counterparts. You can find them in Southern Africa and East Africa, particularly in South Africa's Greater Kruger National Park and Kenya's Ol Pejeta Conservancy, which is also a haven for the black rhino.

The black rhino is sadly critically endangered. Most of what's left of this amazing species can be found in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, and Kenya. Wherever you view rhino it is critical to respect their privacy and security by not sharing their precise locations on social media or posting images that may give clues to poachers.

Mountain gorilla: a jungle specialist

Mountain gorillas are iconic in their own right. These magnificent great apes are found in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park and the Virunga Mountains spanning Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Rwanda and Uganda are renowned for their gorilla conservation efforts funded largely by tourism through gorilla trekking. This is a safe and wonderfully immersive experience as you get to observe these magnificent creatures at close quarters.

We're often asked if an African safari is suitable for children, to which we always reply: "Absolutely"! We work with some of the best safari lodges and camps in East and Southern Africa, many of which have dedicated safari programs for kids, allowing you some downtime while they have the time of their lives learning all about the African bush!

Family safaris are exciting and educational adventures designed to provide children with a unique opportunity to experience the wonders of the natural world. They're safe, fun, and educational for kids of all ages.

The trick to getting a fantastic family safari is using an operator and agent like Luxury Focus Safaris who know the camps and lodges they work with intimately, understanding which destinations are the best for your family's needs. We have more than 30 years' experience in the safari industry so understand how to combine suitable lodges and camps on a family itinerary that's going to give you the vacation you need and your children the adventure they crave.

Perhaps more than any other animal, the lion embodies what it is to be African. You can probably thank Disney's "The Lion King" for its global recognition as an African icon, but there's so much more to lions than Simba would give them credit for!

The lion is recognized as the "king of the jungle", even though it doesn't actually live in jungles but mostly out in the African savannah where it reigns supreme. This apex predator is the world's only social big cat, living in prides that can be as big as 30 or more. Lions spend their lives in a perpetual battle for territory with pride males fighting to keep their home range and the right to mate with females.

Explore Tanzania's breathtaking Mahale Mountains National Park

One of Tanzania's hidden gems, Mahale Mountains National Park is located in the western part of this beautiful East African country, on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. Remote and incredibly wild, this stunning national park is home to one of the largest populations of chimpanzees in the world and offers unforgettable chimp tracking experiences.

Covering an area of 623 square miles and known for its lush forests, pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and stunning mountain scenery, Mahale Mountains National Park is only accessible by boat or plane, which makes the journey to this breathtaking place an adventure in itself!

The park is home to an estimated 1,000 chimpanzees, which are habituated to human presence, meaning that you can observe them up-close in their natural habitat without disturbing their natural behavior. Chimps are our closest cousins with whom we share some 98% of our DNA. They are intelligent, social, and complex animals with a wide range of behaviors and emotions.

Chimpanzees are found in the wild in tropical forests and woodlands in central and western Africa. They live in large groups led by a dominant male, known as the alpha male, and females with their offspring. The group size can vary from as few as 15 to over 100 individuals.

Like us, chimps are omnivores and their diet consists of fruits, leaves, seeds, insects, and sometimes small mammals such as monkeys or rodents. They have been recorded using tools to obtain certain foods, such as using sticks to extract termites from their nests or using stones to crack open nuts.

Chimpanzees are known for their complex social structure and behavior, using grooming and playing to develop hierarchies, and communicating with each other through a variety of vocalizations, gestures, and facial expressions. They form strong bonds with their family members and other members of their group and often engage in reconciliatory behavior after conflicts.

They have also been observed exhibiting extremely aggressive and sometimes physically violent behavior towards members of their own group or towards individuals of other groups, hitting or biting them while screaming loudly and pant-hooting.

Chimp tracking experiences in Mahale Mountains National Park require you to set out early in the morning with your guide to find the chimps. The trek through the forest can be challenging, but the scenery is stunning, and the experience is well worth the effort. Your guide will lead you through the forest, pointing out other wildlife and plants along the way, until you reach the chimps.

You will hear them before you see them. They can be heard from a distance, and the sounds they make will become louder and more intense as you get closer. When you finally catch a glimpse of them, you will be amazed by their intelligence, curiosity, and human-like actions.

The number of chimp tracking permits issued each day is limited so that the number of visitors the chimps receive is properly regulated. You'll have the chance to spend a few hours with them, observing them at close quarters and following them on foot as they move through the forest.

The trek back to your lodge can be just as challenging as the trek in, but you will be rewarded with stunning views of Lake Tanganyika and the surrounding mountains.

Chimpanzees are under threat in the wild all over their range countries thanks to habitat loss, poaching and disease. Conservation efforts to protect them include the creation of protected areas such as Mahale Mountains National Park. It's therefore a real privilege to be able to see them in their natural habitat.

Of course, Mahale Mountains National Park is not just about chimpanzees. The park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including elephants, leopards, and a rich diversity of birdlife. The park also has several hiking trails that lead to stunning viewpoints, waterfalls, and hidden beaches. The park's remoteness, combined with the stunning scenery and incredible wildlife, makes for a truly unforgettable travel experience.

When it comes to fishing or angling, it doesn't get much better than the wilds of Africa and the beautiful turquoise oceans of the Seychelles... And with some of the top trophy fish in the world inhabiting the waters of Africa's key rivers and lakes and the spectacular warm waters of the Indian Ocean, you know that an angling vacation is going to be one of the best you've ever had. So, let's find out more...

If you're an avid angler then you've probably heard of tiger fishing, and if you haven't, then you're in for a treat. The waterways of Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Botswana are famed for this titan of the sport angling world, known for its razor-sharp teeth and fierce fighting ability. Nicknamed the "water dog" getting a tiger on the hook is no mean feat, thanks to its hard, bony palate that makes it critically important that your first strike is hard enough to penetrate it.

Once a tiger is on the line it's all about letting it run, and then reeling in slow and steady, expecting a lot of aggression and some bruised ribs along the way! It's a unique fishing experience and one that's hard to beat when it comes to your surroundings.

Tiger fishing hot spots

Top of the list of Africa's tiger fishing hot spots is the mighty Zambezi River and its tributaries like the Kafue and the Chobe. This means you can go on a fishing safari in Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe and combine your favorite sport with traditional safari activities like game viewing and birding.

The Zambezi is home to some of the largest and most ferocious tiger fish on the continent and the best time to fish is from August to November, when the water is warm and the fish are most active. That said, green season safaris from January to April are also great times to be out on this spectacular river.

If you're a keen angler then taking your own rod and equipment is recommended, but most of the lodges we partner with also supply good quality gear if needed. Just remember that you need a wire leader with tiger fish to prevent them biting through your line! Yes - they are THAT fierce!

Bait fish like chessa and small tilapia are good for tigers and all fishing is done on a catch and release basis in order to protect populations. Lures like spoons and jigs also work well. The average decent size you can expect on a Zambezi expedition is around 15-20lbs, but the tiger fish has a huge cousin - the goliath tiger - that can get up to 5ft long and weigh in at over 150lbs!

The experience of tiger fishing is just as great as landing one. Africa's major rivers are serene and beautiful beyond belief and home to a variety of wildlife in and on its banks. You can expect to see hippo, crocodiles, elephant, buffalo and even lion and leopard on a tiger fishing trip, and the birdlife is out of this world.

From sea to shining sea

When it comes to trophy fishing, it's hard to beat the idyllic Indian Ocean island nation of the Seychelles off Africa's eastern coastline. Meet an African icon - the elephant

Find out where's best to see these amazing animals in action

When you're on safari, there is nothing to beat the thrill of an up-close and personal encounter with an African elephant. This most iconic of African animals is also the world's largest land mammal can weigh up to 13,000lbs! Fully grown bull elephants can stand as tall as 10ft at the shoulder. Their ears can be as much as 5ft long and act like giant fans, cooling the blood as they flap.

The cows are significantly shorter and almost half the weight of a mature, adult bull. Elephant trunks have hundreds of thousands of muscles in them and it takes a baby elephant up to six months to master the art of using this amazing appendage! Both male and female African elephants have tusks which are enlarged canine teeth that keep growing throughout their lives.

In African folklore the elephant is often characterised as having once been human. This is most likely because elephant intelligence, emotional cognisance and society very closely mirror our own, so we easily empathise and identify with this incredible animal.

Elephants are also revered in many African cultures for embodying the souls of long-dead ancestors, making them incredibly wise and all-knowing. When observing elephants at close quarters it is easy to understand how we have endowed them with these incredible human qualities. They have a certain aura about them that sets them apart from other animals, making them unique and incredibly special.

Self aware

Intelligent, emotional, empathetic and acknowledged as being sentient, they are capable of using tools, recognize themselves in mirrors, have incredible spatial awareness and recent research has even shown that they are able to work out which humans are the most dangerous, giving them the ability to classify us into groups that pose different degrees of danger!

Elephants "grieve" for their dead and offer assistance to others in their family unit in distress. The oldest members of herds have innate "wisdom" and store knowledge and experience of both their social groups and their environment.

They are able to hear and communicate over enormous distances through low-frequency, infrasonic rumbles and other vocalizations, including trumpeting, as well as foot stomping, which resonate at a frequency other elephants can detect through the ground.

They have enlarged ear bones and sensitive nerve endings in their feet and trunks and "hear" these sounds through the soft skin pads on their feet, picking up the sensitive, seismic vibrations and are thought to also lay their trunks on the ground to detect vibrations.

Where's best to see them

One of the best destinations in Africa to see elephants is Botswana's magnificent Chobe National Park, where huge herds can be found along the Chobe River and its confluence with the Zambezi. It's a renowned safari destination where you can explore on land and by boat, and where four countries come together - Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia and Namibia, making it easy to hop across borders and combine these into one amazing safari itinerary.

Of course, the Okavango Delta in Botswana is also a special place to see elephants which are widespread across this UNESCO World Heritage Site where the waters of the Kavango river system empty into the sands of the Kalahari, creating a unique landlocked wetland that's a haven for wildlife and one of the world's most renowned wilderness areas.

Along the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe (Mana Pools National Park) and Zambia (Lower Zambezi National Park) there are huge herds of elephants that move regularly across the river and on to the islands that dot its stream. Mana is renowned for its acrobatic elephants who stand on their hind legs to browse on the pods of the albida trees. Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park is also famed for its elephants.

In East Africa, Kenya's Amboseli National Park is synonymous with elephants and especially large tuskers, as well as a landscape dominated by the iconic Kilimanjaro - Africa's highest mountain. And in South Africa, the world-renowned Kruger National Park has some of the highest concentrations of elephants in the southern part of the continent.

For really unusual elephants sightings, try Namibia's breathtakingly beautiful Etosha National Park. The fine white dust of Etosha's vast salt pans forms a thick pale grey clay around the park's various waterholes that elephants love to mud bathe in before dusting themselves off, turning them from large dark grey animals to unearthly pale "grey ghosts"! It has to be seen to be believed!

Protecting them

There is so much that has been written about elephants, so many facts and figures, so much research done by so many that sheds light on their way of life. And there is so much being done throughout Africa to try and protect them from their biggest threat - humans.

It's said we lose an elephant every 15 minutes to ivory poachers. That's roughly 100 elephants each and every day. But we are doing so much more than slaughtering them, making it very hard for them to live alongside us.

Their range is hampered by human expansion and human competition for the same resources - access to water and food. It's restricted by the fence lines we put up to both protect them and us. Elephants need space, and it's up to us to ensure that there is enough space for them, and that we learn to live alongside them through better understanding their needs.

We choose safari lodges and camps that support conservation programs that are helping to save Africa's elephants. Heaven on the banks of the Zambezi

Welcome to one of Zambia's best-loved destinations...

There's something special about Zambia's Lower Zambezi Valley. Flanked by an impressive mountain range, its wide floodplains are home to one of the most beautiful wilderness areas in Southern Africa.

On the northern banks of the mighty Zambezi River, at a point where the river is wide and lazy, chugging along at a steady three miles an hour on its way from Kariba Dam in the west to Mozambique's Cahora Bassa Dam in the east, this is both a critically important ecological region and a superlative safari destination, all rolled into one. The Zambezi is the biggest eastward-flowing river on the continent and its fourth-longest. On the opposite bank is Zimbabwe's Mana Pools National Park - a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Lower Zambezi National Park is the star of the show on the Zambian side of the river, flanked by the Chiawa Game Management Area (GMA) to its west.

The game viewing is outstanding, with lots of plains game and predators. Lion, leopard, hyena and painted wolves (African wild dogs) are prevalent here and guests are blessed with regular sightings both in the GMA and in the park itself. Plains game includes kudu, impala, waterbuck, wildebeest and zebra. There are no giraffe here as they have never managed to negotiate the high mountains to the north that form a formidable barrier, and excellent viewing points for sundowners!

This vast area is home to some of the most lauded safari camps and lodges in Zambia that attract travelers from all over the world who fall in love with the diversity of wildlife, the breathtaking beauty of the river and the exciting range of activities this region is renowned for, most of which have the river as their focal point. You can indulge in river safaris, cruising past islands filled with life, spotting the huge herds of elephant and buffalo that make this destination such a huge tourism drawcard. Stop for coffee on a sand bank or island, and if you like take a fishing rod and some bait and try your hand at some tiger fishing. This is the home of Africa's tiger fish - also called the river dog - with its fearsome teeth and legendary fighting ability giving anglers a run for their money!

You also have the chance to catch huge vundu - a local catfish that lives mostly on the bottom of the river in the quiet drop off areas and which can reach monstrous proportions. The river is also filled with bream. All fishing is on a catch and release basis, so what you hook you give back to the river.

Here are our recommendations for where to stay in the Lower Zambezi:

Royal Zambezi Lodge:

With its unique blend of understated elegance and warm hospitality, this beautiful lodge is a short flight by small plane from Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in the Zambian capital city of Lusaka, landing on the tarred airstrip that runs parallel to the Zambezi River. You can also transfer from other lodges or the border town of Chirundu or by boat, mooring at a jetty that seems to go on forever, lapped by the waters of Zambezi (it's Africa's fourth longest river, after the Nile, the Congo and the Niger).

Royal Zambezi Lodge is located in the Chiawa GMA. There are no fences, so the local wildlife roams freely with game activities taking place both inside the nearby Lower Zambezi National Park and in the GMA itself. While the usual safari season lasts from April to November each year (due to the rainy season which makes most of the national park inaccessible), Royal Zambezi Lodge stays open all year and offers mostly boat-based safari activities during the summer months (December to March).

The lodge has a total of 15 rooms - eight deluxe suites, two of which are conveniently conjoinable to create a lovely family suite, and seven combined presidential suites and honeymoon suites, some big enough for families who don't mind being under the same roof. All have river views and private plunge pools, with private, enclosed courtyards and wonderful decks that are the perfect place to enjoy a refreshing drink and the panoramic vistas.

The lodge has its own spa, lovely curio shop and swimming pool on the edge of the river, with a well-stocked bar and lounge area alongside. It's the perfect place for a refreshing cocktail in the afternoon, watching the river pass by and the birds come and go in the canopy above.

Chiawa Camp

Family owned and operated, Chiawa Camp was the first commercial lodge to be launched in the Lower Zambezi National Park and has since become one of Zambia's best-loved luxury safari camps. Founded on the principle of simple, authentic bush experiences without scrimping on life's little luxuries, Chiawa offers gentle, unhurried immersion in the surrounding splendour of the national park with unrivalled views out over the Zambezi.

The camp is located inside the national park on the banks of the Zambezi and is accessed by small plane from Lusaka via Jeki Airstrip, with daily scheduled flights during the safari season. It is open from April to November each year. With eight safari tents and the family friendly Safari Suite, all taking advantage of their riverfront position, each room blends in perfectly with its surroundings while offering all the space you need to unwind, relax and commune with Mother Nature.

Each huge tent has a super-king sized bed that splits into two oversized single beds under a massive mosquito net complete with fan, a lounge area with another fan and the option for a third bed or bunkbed for younger families.

The tents open on to a shaded veranda with lots of space for relaxation including a “bench wallow” which in cool weather is a sunken lounge area and in hot weather, a plunge pool on demand. The Safari Suite is double the size of the standard safari tents and has its own plunge pool and more than enough space for three children sharing with their parents.

Sausage Tree Camp

Embodying the ethos of bush chic, Sausage Tree Camp enjoys a wonderful riverfront location with stunning views up and down the Zambezi. With a maximum of just 18 guests, the camp offers a truly exclusive safari experience with lots of luxury and pampering to boot.

Overlooking beautiful reeded islands filled with game and regularly visited by elephants, the accent is on providing an idyllic base from which to explore the Lower Zambezi National Park, either on traditional game drives, on foot with guided bush walks or out on the river - the star of the show. As its name implies, the camp is shaded by a grove of sausage trees, dotted with the odd mahogany or two. Elephants regularly amble through camp on their way to drink at the river and the ambience is one of blending effortlessly with wild Africa.

Each of the seven suites is kitted out in gorgeous minimalist style and comes with the services of a private butler. Open air showers, large spacious decks overlooking the river and private plunge pools add to the overall feeling of space and tranquility.

A private family suite named Kigelia House offers privacy for small groups or families, consisting of two en-suite bedrooms separated by an open-plan living area leading on to a private deck with its own pool.

South Africa's commercial capital, Johannesburg is known as "Egoli" - meaning the city of gold - thanks to the discovery here in 1853 of rich deposits of this precious metal. It's gold that put it on the map and saw it grow into one of the wealthiest cities in the world.

Today, Johannesburg is a cultural melting pot and a fascinating blend of everything that makes South Africa so special, with a trendy art and music scene and, of course, some fabulous breweries.

The "mother city" of Cape Town is the oldest in the country, having been founded in 1652 by the Dutch East India Company as an important refreshment station for its spice ships en-route to the Dutch East Indies. It grew in the shadow of one of the most iconic mountains on the planet - Table Mountain - and today is recognized for its cosmopolitan vibe, history, and beauty.

As part of your tour, you'll be ascending Table Mountain by cable car and spending time exploring its magnificent flat peak and enjoying some of the best views in the world. You'll also be visiting breweries and restaurants in this bustling modern city, exploring the magnificent Cape Peninsula, and taking a tour of the Cape Winelands and the vineyards that produce some of the best wines in the world.

A conservation legend

You'll be leaving the city life behind when you head to the iconic Kruger National Park, one of the most revered conservation areas in the world and a pristine African wilderness like no other. Your destination - Lukimbi Safari Lodge - is one of only seven private concessions inside the Kruger Park, located in the southern section of the reserve and bounded by three major river systems.

With no more than 32 guests at once traversing a huge area, this is an exclusive opportunity to see the fabled "Big Five" - elephant, rhino, leopard, lion and buffalo - at close quarters. The Lukimbi concession offers a range of habitats from grasslands and wooded thickets to dry river beds, rolling hills, and lush riparian forests.
